The Maine Adapted Physical Education Task Force provides consultation, training, and support for professionals, organizations, and families interested in the physical education of children and youth with disabilities. The Task Force includes representatives from a variety of disciplines related to Adapted Physical Education.

Federal and state laws mandate that all children with disabilities receive appropriate physical education instruction in the least restrictive environment.

Special/Adapted Physical Education is a DIRECT educational service. It is a key element of a child's educational programming. APE may NOT be replaced by a RELATED service such as physical therapy, occupational therapy or therapeutic recreation.

The Maine Department of Education offers a teaching endorsement in Adapted Physical Education (515) to credentialed Physical Educators (510).

The Task Force works closely with the Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) to provide in-service training in adapted physical education to physical educators at their annual conference.

Each year the Task Force and MAHPERD recognize a credentialed physical education teacher demonstrating distinguished accomplishments in adapted physical education with the Dr . Richard H. Bartlett Adapt ed Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award.
