Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance 70th Annual Conference a Great Success!
The Maine Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) held its 70th Annual Conference at the Samoset Resort, Rockport, on November 1 – 3, 2015.
Over 500 physical education and health education teachers, as well as dance educators, recreation personnel and students participated in over 80 conference sessions and workshops. Highlights include keynote speakers Tony Loomis, SHAPE America Physical Education Teacher of the Year and Dr. Darla Castelli, from The University of Texas at Austin, one of the leading national researchers on the connection of physical activity and its impact on cognition. The conference also hosted the SHAPE America president, Steve Jefferies. In addition, the National Health Education Teacher of the Year, Amy Prior, presented two sessions. Overall conference feedback indicated this was an exceptional professional development event; sessions were very informative and relevant and participants enjoyed the many networking opportunities with colleagues.
MAHPERD was pleased to honor Nicolas Lyons, Durham Community School, as Maine Teacher of the Year for Elementary School Physical Education and Michele Higgins, Westbrook Middle School, as the Maine Teacher of the Year for Middle School Physical Education. MAHPERD Honor Awards were presented to Kathy Sutton and Paula Hodgdon.
Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart Coordinators of the Year Awards were presented to
Kathy Calo, Wells Elementary School; Sharon Thompson, Vivian E. Hussey School; Andy Plaisted, George B. Weatherbee School and Adam Newell, Warren Community School. Gary Spinney received the Lifetime Jump Rope for Heart Award.
